Chapter 13

Kedun

Kedun’s eyes adjusted to the dim lighting as he pushed into the main bunker room. There stood four prisoners who quickly walked toward him.

“Old friend are you here to rescue us?” one said to him.

Kedun blinked as he took in the four and realized the two Hjotts were his friends from the war, Corq and Dariux; the Terud and the Caze. There was also an Aulius as well as Adit. They had all been spies on the Hjott side.

“Dariux! My friend,” Kedun advanced on the other as they set their hands on each other’s shoulders and touched their foreheads together. He did the same with Corq. Kedun turned to Aryn.

“These four were wrongly imprisoned for treason under false pretenses. Tried as we might, they found the evidence too damning on their parts,” Kedun said.

“They accused us of doing things we would have never done,” Dariux said as he thumbed to Corq.

“It was a harried situation. Vorta clamped down on the prison sentences, especially if we investigated too much. We knew him already for throwing people who went against his better judgment into the biodomes.” Kedun shook his head.

“Damning planted evidence. Please tell me, brother, do you believe in our innocence?” Corq asked Kedun.

“Why else are you here? I’m assuming they didn’t want you up there since you shouldn’t be here in the first place,” Kedun replied.

“We swear on our lives, we had no part in any of this.”

“Good thing I’m here. I have a personal friendship with the King,” Kedun told them.

“And who is this being?” Adit asked, referring to Aryn.

“She’s my Qetesh agent partner. When the breaches occurred, Vorta sent us here to investigate.”

“Vorta is up to no good,” Corq interjected.

“Are you still into that conspiracy?” Kedun shook his head. “They thought Vorta had ill dealings with others, Aryn. King Thras unfortunately appointed him as Premier in his absence.”

“Something’s not right. I sincerely hope that I’m wrong, but Vorta does not have our people’s best interests at heart,” Dariux replied.

“Whether you are right or wrong is besides the point at the moment. We have a situation to deal with and I hope Jatra is sending help. I hope you aren’t right about Vorta and he has just sent us into this with ill intentions,” Aryn said.

“Trust me, you’re the head Qetesh agent, he’ll not want curry ill will amongst the signatories of the Galactic Treaty. He called for help,” Kedun replied.

“We need to know what happened.” Aryn sat on a bench and peered up at the four prisoners. She was right, they’d probably only heard half-truths up to this point.

Dariux nodded. “Please give me your word that you will do what you can to help pardon us once we come to a resolution in this.”

“If we make it out alive,” Caze added. His shifty eyes peered toward the hall.

“Ships are coming,” Kedun said as he touched the man on the arm. “Aryn’s right, we need a full account of what has happened.”

“Here’s the thing. Vorta had some secret dealings with the Teruds before the war ended.
